Sycamore series review

http://www.sycamoreseries.co.uk/page13/page13.htmls

John and Petula Compton have a well organised website. A wealth of ensemble music is carefully graded, beginner intermediate and advanced. For any teacher with a music centre ensemble there is a piece for every level and every occasion. Highlights include Burgundy Waltz for beginners, a lovely lilting melody with good differentiation of parts. Chelsea Jazz with the staccato accompaniment and melodies shared around the parts. El Vuelo de la Cisne with a lovely percussion introduction. There are also some excellent Christmas carol arrangements. The music is free for teachers to print off. The only music to purchase is Scenes and Themes. This has a book of teacher accompaniments and is a great source of repertoire for beginners, the first section has eight pieces for open strings which I find invaluable. The second section covers G A and B, Horse Riding being a favourite with teachers and pupils. The note range of D A C D on the treble strings is good for building secure left hand technique and as the melodies were written for beginners repeated notes are used to limit the difficulties of too much string crossing.

The Sycamore Series site has something for everyone, testament to John and Petulas’ experience and creativity as guitar teachers over the years.
