The Associate Board Of The Royal Schools Of Music (The ABRSM) has announced recently on its web-site outline plans for the latest revision of the Guitar Syllabus.
The new syllabus, in force from 1st January 2019 onwards, will include many new pieces and, critically, a new Preparatory Test. The present Prep Test has been around since 2001 so an overhaul is very welcome news.
The new syllabus will be published on 6th September 2018, along with what appear to be plans for the Board itself to publish — for the first time — the full set of pieces for grades 1 to 5. More news on this interesting departure at a later stage. Other boards have of course for some time been publishing their full sets of guitar exam pieces in single books and it tends to make acquiring the pieces more convenient for the teacher &/or student.
As is customary in these matters there will be an overlap until the Spring of 2019, during which time candidates can still use pieces from the old syllabus. More detail on the Board’s web-site.
